The European Meeting on Fire Retardant Polymeric Materials (FRPM 2019) was held from 26th to 28th June 2019 in Turku, Finland. The event attracted various stakeholder groups who wanted to find out more about current trends and innovations linked to topics such as flame retardants for all types of polymeric materials, chemical safety and regulations, fire modelling and simulations as well as recent developments in fire testing technology. The three-day event held every two years offers an optimal platform for networking and knowledge sharing between researchers but also with a number of industries, chemical agencies and legislators.
Mat4Rail partners, Nick Wolter representing University of Bremen and Fraunhofer IFAM, and Anna Sandinge from RISE to present their poster on Manufacturing of fiber reinforced polybenzoxazine with advanced fire, smoke and toxicitiy properties.

The poster presentation included a description and examination of a manufacturing approach for  fiber reinforced polybenzoxazine in presence of fire retardant additives. Polybenzoxazine with phosphorous based organic fire retardant additive were formulated and used as matrix for basalt woven as reinforcement. The lightweight materials show high potential to fulfill hazard levels 2 and 3 for external and internal application and are therefore particularly suitable for high-end application in the railway industry.

The shared Mat4Rail outcomes and results were met with interest and feedback received was positive. The poster presented by Nick was nominated by the scientific committee for the best poster prize and won 3rd place of the approximately 72 posters presented on improving fire safety of polymeric materials. We would like to congratulate Nick, Anna and all partners involved in the research development in this field and on the positive outcome.”
