Publication on "Adhesiveley- and hybrid- bonded joining of basalt and carbon fibre reinforced polybenzoxazine- based composites"
Nick Wolter, Vinicius Carillo Beber, Markus Brede and Katherina Koschek present their newest findings. The paper is about Polybenzoxazines-based composites which are an excellent alternative in lightweight design due to their outstanding properties in terms of chemical stability, inherent flame resistance, as well as mechanical performance. The paper provides an investigation of different joining techniques for polybenzoxazine-based composites, namely adhesively - and hybrid bonded joining.

Final event invitation: Paris, 17 September 2019
PIVOT, Mat4Rail, Run2Rail and Fair Stations invite you to their joint final event that will take place on the 17th of September in Paris. These Shift2Rail Joint Technology Initiatives will present their developments performed within the “Innovation Programme 1: Cost-efficient and reliable trains, including high-capacity trains and high-speed trains” and “Innovation Programme 3: Cost-Efficient and Reliable High-Capacity Infrastructure”). The event will be hosted at SNCF (“Campus Wilson”, 9 rue Jean Philippe Rameau, 93200 La Plaine Saint- Denis).
The consortium members would like to invite you to attend the event and participate in the discussions which will benefit from your knowledge and expertise. The day will be split up into specific topics related to five Technology Demonstrators; TD1.3 The new generation of car body shells, TD1.4 Running Gear, TD1.5 New Braking Systems, TD1.6 Innovative Doors and TD1.7 Train Modularity in Use. Final results and achievements will be presented, poster sessions organized and technology demonstrators exhibited.

The poster presentation included a description and examination of a manufacturing approach for fiber reinforced polybenzoxazine in presence of fire retardant additives. Polybenzoxazine with phosphorous based organic fire retardant additive were formulated and used as matrix for basalt woven as reinforcement. The lightweight materials show high potential to fulfill hazard levels 2 and 3 for external and internal application and are therefore particularly suitable for high-end application in the railway industry.
The shared Mat4Rail outcomes and results were met with interest and feedback received was positive. The poster presented by Nick was nominated by the scientific committee for the best poster prize and won 3rd place of the approximately 72 posters presented on improving fire safety of polymeric materials. We would like to congratulate Nick, Anna and all partners involved in the research development in this field and on the positive outcome.”
A number of Mat4Rail partners traveled to Paris, France in March 2019 to participate at the JEC World 2019 which was held 12th – 14th March 2019.
The JEC World is known to be the leading international show on composites featuring ground-breaking research and solutions and unique manufacturing and business opportunities. In total, the event attracted over 43,300 visitors and members from CIDETEC, COEXPAIR, AIMPLAS and HUNTSMAN were also part of this 3-day event.
Our partners used this platform to facilitate networking with targeted audiences in the field of composites and to present the new Mat4Rail brochure for the first time. Over 1,300 exhibitors presented their innovative solutions to a large audience. One of these was our partner COEXPAIR, a highly innovative SME from the aeronautics sector.
For Mat4Rail, they use their expertise in composites to make their know-how of innovative processes, the development of out-of-autoclave technologies, their tooling and peripheral equipment available. During the JEC World, COEXPAIR was on site to present themselves but also their contributions to Mat4Rail where they lead WP5 on access door systems.
The Mat4Rail and PIVOT projects take their first steps towards standardisation of composites and dissimilar joints for use in Carbody
In particular, PIVOT's project was represented by the work package leaders Eduardo de la Guerra from Talgo, Carlos Eraso from Aernnova, and Thierry Mointagné from Faiveley/Wabtec. Mat4Rail was represented by the project coordinator, Elena Jubete from CIDETEC, Markus Brede from the University of Bremen, Roland from IMADresden and Johan Sandström, from RISE. As for external consultants, both projects counted on the feedback of Geoff Matter-Chairman of the CEN TC 256 SC 2 Rolling Stock products, as well as Andreas Gross-from Fraunhofer IFAM responsible for the working Group 52 "Adhesive bonding in Railway" in the TC256.
From the 27th – 28th February 2019 representatives of the 16 Mat4Rail partners traveled to Basel, Switzerland for the 4th General Assembly. The meeting was hosted by our partner HUNTSMAN and offered the opportunity to further discuss project results and make decisions on how these should be best implemented. The work streams for materials and for interior design also held smaller meeting to discus their advancements and results in their fields which supports the outcomes and effectiveness of the project as a whole. We look forward to what the last six months of the project will bring.
With 18 topics of which 6 are open to S2R Members (CFM) and 12 to non-JU Members (OC), this Call is expected to raise high interest in the transport communityand beyond.
Carlo M Borghini, Executive Director of the Shift2Rail JU, expressed his high expectations for the new 2019 projects: “After having presented some of our first results last year at InnoTrans, the programme is now in the final stages of bringing demonstrations closer to the market. I am also looking forward to the submission of high quality proposals introducing innovative solutions to reshape the railway system in Europe,in order to bring more capacity, attractiveness and punctuality to this sustainable transport mode”. The indicative H2020 co-funding made available by the S2R JU for this Call is €76,9 million, out of an estimated projects’ value of around €150,3 million. The S2R JU is looking forward to a broader participation to the 2019 Call, both geographically and in terms of synergies, allowing for new S2R activities that will demonstrate to the sector at large the potential for innovation to deliver a bright future for railway.

The event will be a meeting point for companies and research organisations that meet Horizon 2020 eligibility criteria and wish to carry out collaborative R&I projects in the area of railway mobility, in collaboration with ongoing and future projects of Shift2Rail Members.
There will be a special opportunity for SMEs to network and brainstorm on projects they could create together to improve the rail system of the future.
The Joint Undertaking expects to build on last edition’s success, in which more than 250 rail stakeholders participated.
